The World's Most Extraordinary Airports

A runway that a public road crosses. A runway that vanishes at high tide. A runway that ends at a cliff with a 300-metre drop. These airports are not accidents or curiosities — each one is the answer to a geography problem that had no better answer.

A standard commercial runway is a flat, level, 3,000-metre strip with obstacle-free approach paths at both ends and an instrument landing system to guide aircraft down in poor visibility. Everything below is a place where at least one of those conditions was impossible, and somebody built an airport anyway.

The short ones

Runway length is the hardest constraint in aviation. It determines what can land, how heavy it can be, and whether an aborted takeoff ends on tarmac or somewhere else.

The ones that fight their terrain

Paro, Bhutan (PBH)

Paro sits at 2,235 metres in a Himalayan valley surrounded by peaks rising above 5,000 metres. There is no straight-in approach; aircraft descend by manoeuvring visually between mountainsides, with the final turn onto the runway made only seconds before touchdown. Flights operate in daylight and good visibility only. The number of pilots certified to fly the approach has historically been in the low dozens — a figure often quoted as around eight to twenty-five depending on the year — making it one of the most exclusive qualifications in commercial aviation.

Cristiano Ronaldo Madeira (FNC), Portugal

Madeira had a 1,600-metre runway hemmed in by ocean on one side and mountains on the other, and no land to extend onto. The solution, completed in 2000, was to build the extension out over the water on 180 concrete pillars, each around 70 metres tall, carrying a platform that roughly doubled the runway length to 2,781 metres. The structure won a major engineering award. The wind conditions remain notorious: severe crosswind and turbulence from the terrain mean Madeira diversions are routine, and the approach requires special pilot certification.

Daocheng Yading (DCY), China

The highest civilian airport in the world at roughly 4,411 metres — higher than most of the Alps. At that altitude air density is about 60% of sea level, which means engines produce less thrust, wings produce less lift, and the runway has to be far longer to compensate. Daocheng Yading’s is 4,200 metres. The terminal supplies supplementary oxygen for passengers. Qamdo Bamda in Tibet, at about 4,334 metres, held the record before it and has one of the longest public runways anywhere for the same reason.

The soft seabed has compacted far more than predicted — over 12 metres since construction — and the island sits on adjustable hydraulic columns that are shimmed to keep the terminal level.
Gisborne (GIS), New ZealandAn active railway line crosses the runwayTrain movements are coordinated with air traffic control. The rail line has seen limited use in recent years, but the crossing remains.

The ones built where nothing should be

  • Ice Runway and Phoenix Airfield, Antarctica. Runways graded directly onto sea ice and compacted snow, serving the McMurdo research station. The ice runway has to be re-established each season and is abandoned when it starts to break up. Wheeled C-17s land on it.
  • Svalbard (LYR), Norway. The northernmost airport in the world with scheduled service, at 78° north. Built on permafrost, which is a problem because permafrost that thaws does not hold a runway.
  • Qamdo Bamda and Lhasa Gonggar, Tibet. High-altitude operations requiring special engine performance calculations and, at some fields, mandatory oxygen for crew.
  • Matekane Air Strip, Lesotho. A 400-metre strip ending abruptly at a cliff with a roughly 600-metre drop. Light aircraft effectively depart into free-fall and gain flying speed in the descent. Now largely disused, and one of the few airstrips that has been called a “launch ramp” without exaggeration.
  • Saint Helena (HLE), South Atlantic. Opened in 2016 after the island had been reachable only by ship. Wind shear over the cliffs turned out to be so severe that the runway could not initially accept the aircraft type it was designed for, and the service had to be re-planned around a smaller one. A cautionary tale about modelling terrain-induced turbulence.

Why these places get built at all

It is tempting to read this list as engineering showing off. It is closer to the opposite: almost every entry exists because the alternative was isolation.

Saba’s runway is the difference between a two-hour flight and a long ferry crossing in Caribbean swell. Lukla replaced a multi-day trek. Barra’s beach means the Outer Hebrides have same-day access to Glasgow. Saint Helena spent two centuries dependent on a mail ship. Madeira’s pillars were cheaper than accepting that wide-body aircraft could never serve the island. Kansai exists because Osaka’s previous airport could not expand and the region would otherwise have lost its international gateway.

The remarkable thing about the difficult airports is not that they are dramatic. It is that they are safe. Every one of them operates under a regime built specifically for its hazard: site qualifications for pilots, restricted aircraft types, daylight-only rules, weather minima far above the normal, and in several cases a rule that once you are committed to the approach there is no going around — which sounds alarming until you realise it means the decision has been made earlier and more conservatively than it would be anywhere else.
