The Longest Flights in the World

Nearly nineteen hours in a seat, two calendar days, two sunrises and a crew of four pilots. Ultra-long-haul flying is the most technically demanding thing scheduled aviation does — and the routes exist for reasons that are more commercial than romantic.

A flight becomes interesting when it stops being limited by demand and starts being limited by physics. Past roughly fifteen hours, an aircraft is carrying so much fuel that the fuel itself becomes the payload problem: every extra kilogram of kerosene needs more kerosene to lift it. The routes below sit right at that edge.

Two things about this table are worth noticing. First, the aircraft column is remarkably narrow: essentially the Airbus A350 and the Boeing 787 and 777, and nothing else. Second, almost every route connects a city with limited connecting options to a major financial centre. These are not leisure routes.

Why the aircraft matter so much

Ultra-long-haul was briefly possible in the 2000s, then became impossible again, then became possible once more. That history is entirely about engines and airframes.

The payload–range trade

The A350-900ULR flying Singapore–Newark is configured with roughly 161 seats, against about 300 in a standard A350-900. That is not a comfort decision, it is an arithmetic one. Fuel for nineteen hours weighs so much that the aircraft cannot also carry a full passenger load, their bags and cargo without exceeding maximum takeoff weight. Singapore Airlines flies the route with no economy cabin at all — premium economy and business only — because those are the only fares that pay for a seat on an aircraft flying at half its nominal capacity.

This is the central economics of ultra-long-haul: it works when a meaningful number of passengers will pay a premium to avoid a connection, and it fails when they will not.

Operating a nineteen-hour flight

  • Four pilots, not two. Flight-time limitation rules require augmented crew beyond certain durations. The aircraft has a crew rest compartment; pilots take rostered sleep in shifts, and two are always at the controls.
  • Two full cabin crew rotations. Cabin crew also rest in a dedicated bunk area, typically above or below the main deck.
  • Fuel loaded for a diversion that is very far away. Over the Arctic or the central Pacific, the nearest suitable airport can be hours distant. These routes are flown under ETOPS approvals of up to 330 minutes — meaning the aircraft is certified to be up to five and a half hours from a diversion airfield on one engine.
  • Catering built around sleep, not meal times. Singapore Airlines and Qantas both engineered their ULH service around circadian adaptation: a substantial meal early, lighting designed to push passengers toward the destination time zone, then a light meal before arrival, with on-demand food in between.
  • Routing over the pole. Singapore–New York frequently tracks north over China, Siberia and the Arctic rather than east across the Pacific, because the great-circle path goes that way. Polar routing brings its own requirements: cold-fuel limits, radiation monitoring, and diversion planning across some very empty terrain.

Project Sunrise: the last frontier

Qantas has been trying to fly Sydney to London nonstop since the 1940s — the route has always been the airline’s defining ambition, and its historic multi-stop version is still called the Kangaroo Route. In 2019 the airline ran three research flights, including New York to Sydney nonstop, with medical researchers on board monitoring passenger and crew sleep, activity and alertness.

It then ordered a modified A350-1000 with an additional centre fuel tank, a reduced seat count of roughly 240, and a dedicated “Wellbeing Zone” in the middle of the aircraft with stretching space — an explicit acknowledgement that twenty hours in a seat is a physiological problem, not just a comfort one. The flights would run around 20 hours and cover about 17,000 km, making them comfortably the longest scheduled services ever operated.

Delivery has slipped more than once, in line with the industry-wide aerospace delays. Qantas has most recently pointed to 2027 for launch. When it happens, it will be the first time any point on Earth is within a single flight of any other — which is the practical end of the range race.
