The Busiest Airports in the World
“Busiest airport” has at least four different correct answers, depending on whether you count passengers, international passengers, cargo tonnes or aircraft movements. Each ranking has a different winner, and the reason why tells you a lot about how the global network is actually wired.
Airport traffic is one of the few genuinely well-measured things in aviation. Airports Council International collects passenger, cargo and movement figures from its members and publishes an annual ranking, and national regulators publish their own. The numbers below come from that reporting for the 2024 calendar year — the most recent complete, audited dataset — with the caveat that preliminary figures get revised.
By total passengers
This is the headline number: every passenger who boards, disembarks or transits, counted once. Atlanta has held first place for most of the past three decades, and for a reason that has nothing to do with Atlanta being a large city.

Why Atlanta?
Because Atlanta is a hub, not a destination. Delta operates one of the most concentrated hub-and-spoke operations in the world there, and a very large share of ATL’s passengers never leave the terminal — they land, walk to another gate, and leave. Atlanta is also within a two-hour flight of roughly 80% of the US population, which makes it geometrically ideal for routing domestic connections. Dallas/Fort Worth and Chicago O’Hare are on the list for the same structural reason.
Dubai is the mirror image: almost no domestic market at all, and a hub built explicitly to connect Europe, Africa, South Asia and East Asia over a single point. Which is why it wins the next table by a wide margin.
By international passengers
Strip out domestic traffic and the ranking transforms. Every US airport disappears from the top of the list, because the American domestic market is so large that it dominates their totals.

Notice what these airports have in common: they sit in small countries or city-states with outsized flag carriers. Schiphol serves a nation of about 18 million people and handles nearly as much international traffic as Heathrow. Changi serves 6 million. Neither could exist on local demand — they exist because Dutch and Singaporean carriers built connecting networks over them.
By cargo tonnage
The freight ranking is the strangest of the four, because it is dominated by two things that have almost nothing to do with passengers: manufacturing geography and overnight parcel networks.

By aircraft movements
Movements — takeoffs plus landings — measure operational intensity rather than volume. This ranking favours airports with lots of small aircraft, which is why it is overwhelmingly American: the US regional jet network generates enormous movement counts with modest passenger numbers.

The world's busiest routes
Route-level traffic is the most counter-intuitive data in the whole subject. The busiest air corridors on the planet are mostly short domestic hops that Western travellers have never heard of, flown many times a day by wide-body aircraft.

The Jeju–Gimpo figure deserves a moment. It carries more scheduled seats than any transatlantic route by a factor of several, over a distance a fast train would cover in two hours — except that Jeju is an island, so there is no train. Add a large domestic tourism market and a government policy that has long kept the fare low, and you get the densest air corridor on Earth.
What the four rankings tell you together
- Total passengers measures hub geometry more than city size. Atlanta beats New York, London and Tokyo because Delta routes connections through it.
- International passengers measures a country’s willingness to build a connecting hub bigger than its own market — the Dubai, Doha, Singapore and Amsterdam model.
- Cargo measures where things are made and where parcel networks decided to put their sorting centres. It is a map of trade, not travel.
- Movements measures fleet composition. Lots of small jets means lots of movements per passenger.
One more structural point worth knowing: none of these airports are the largest by land area. That title goes to King Fahd International in Dammam, Saudi Arabia, which occupies roughly 780 square kilometres — larger than several countries — while handling a fraction of Atlanta’s traffic.
